Matthew 25

2011. 9. 14. 16:52 | Posted by dfcjoshua
Matthew 25:1-13
All virgins prepared their lamps. And they all became drowsy and fell asleep. They looked the same so far. However, when the bridegroom came, their entity revealed. The wise ones had enough oil but the foolish ones did not. Finally, the bridegroom assign them a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. All of Christians look the same but the content of every life can be different. And the Bible says it is hypocritical. It will determine our destiny that whether we shine the lights from the lamp we hold now.

Matthew 25:14-30
It is not about money but about attitude which waiting for Jesus. We have received something precious from God. And then, we have to be faithful to surrender our life to God. Our passion and devotion for what we are given manifest our understanding about God and our connection to Jesus. Hypocrites seem to be religious but they have nothing to give back to the Lord. Right understanding and relationship will make good fruits in us and they are the firm evidences for our salvation.

Matthew 25:31-46
There are two kinds of people in front of God at the time of judgment. They look almost same but God will separate them into two. And then, he will treat them properly according to their deeds. Believers and hypocrites have the same feature in term of that they did not know what they did, but God will judge them. Nobody excuses I did not know what God wants because the Bible show them clearly. If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will have salvation and attitude as he is asking us. And the attitude that the Spirit leads is to love people who need our help.

Matthew 24

2011. 9. 14. 16:51 | Posted by dfcjoshua
Matthew 24:1-14
Disciples asked 2 question and Jesus answer for them with one. Between Jerusalem's destruction and the last judgment there have been 2 thousand years. And there are a lot of signs such as wars, hatred, and famine etc in our history. Jesus thought they were the same because people without Jesus cannot avoid from the judgment.
The more important thing is not about that how much hard to live during the time of suffering but the judgment is impending for us all the time. Therefore, we have to live lives faithfully. And the faithful life that God wants us to do is to fulfill his purpose to love each other and seek for his righteousness in order to glorify him.

Matthew 24:15-28
There are a lot of suffering in our faith because we are still living in last days. Before Jesus comes here again, we will be exposed to the same circumstance. Death is the most fearful thing we can face in this world. But as Jesus defeated death on his cross, we came to have the unique position in Jesus. Because we belong to Jesus, we can boast of what we have despite of suffering or death. I cannot fill my life with worldly things but I am joyful with heavenly things.

Matthew 24:29-35
The kingdom of God was fulfilled and will be completed. We are in the interval between already and yet of the coming kingdom. And there are a lot of suffering predicted. It's what we are facing and God planed. Nevertheless, our identity will not be changed because we have already been bound with Jesus. Suffering might make Christians trembled but not be able to make us frustrated. If so, how shall I live a life? With what value? "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."

Matthew 24:36-51
The end of this world will come suddenly. While we are still eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, when it doesn’t seem the kingdom comes, Jesus will come here again. So, Jesus asked us to keep watch. Our preparation is not about visible works but invisible things such as faith and attitude. Therefore, we cannot prepare for it in hasty way at once. It will be daily preparation.
Jesus manifested it through the contrast between a faithful and wise servant, and an evil servant. When the servant are committed to his job, he will be praised by the lord. What are we faithful for? He and his kingdom will come when the gospel is spread over the world to the all nations. We have to get the positive attitude to wait for the time as sharing gospel through our words and actions for love’s sake.

Matthew 23

2011. 9. 3. 01:28 | Posted by dfcjoshua
Matthew 23:1-12
Jesus is talking about the teachers of the law and the Pharisees to the crowds and to his disciples. Jesus wanted to teach people the essence of the Christian faith. Jesus asked them to observe what they tell but not to practice what they preach. They bluffed people into believing that they were pious. When we boast to people, we receive our rewards here already. Therefore, we are requested to be humble. We don’t need to seek for the name such as Rabbi, father, and instructors because our religious actions will be rewarded only by God. As citizens of God, we will be praised when we follow God’s policy-the greatest among you will be your servant.

Matthew 23:13-24
Jesus blamed religious leaders for their legalism. They wanted that people approved they were pious according to their practices on laws and tradition. So, they tried to keep all regulations about a tenth of their spices despite of little quantity. Likewise, they elaborated to get fame from people as they were strict to observe written things. However, they missed the spirit of all laws. Although they altered laws into actable rules, they had no effort to practice the genuine meaning there about justice, mercy and faithfulness. They had no concern on reflection of God’s character in them but sought for their own glory. Faith were misunderstood and were manifested wrong. Faith is not competition but resemblance.

Matthew 23:25-32
“If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.” How can we distinguish the true faith? The religious leaders had found their basis on difference from their forefathers. But faith is not about comparison to others. We have salvation with our own faith. The only thing we can get from the comparison is the sense of impending crisis. We have to see the same weakness in us and seek for God’s purpose more in us.
Therefore, they should have cleaned their heart like whitewashed tombs. We are not cleansed by action. Instead we will be able to take a good action when we first clean the inside of our heart. Make inside up with the blood of Christ.

Matthew 23:33-39
We cannot be saved and distinguish what is right without Jesus. When our spiritual eyes are open first of all, then we can listen to word of God from prophets and sages and teachers for the first time. Life without Jesus will be desolate. We will avoid from impending wrath only through Jesus. Faith is not doing goodness. Faith is not a makeshift method to escape unfavorable conditions. But faith is to be a new creature through the cross.

Matthew 22

Matthew 22:1-14
It’s weired wedding because all guests refused an invitation from the king. It’s also the answer in a comparison for Jesus’ authority. His authority is based on his ministry as the Messiah and he is the only reason why we can wear wedding clothes.

Matthew 22:15-22
The religious leaders came to Jesus in order to trap him. Pharisees questioned him on his opinion about the imperial tax. Jesus’ answer is that they give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. It is neither dichotomy nor compromise. We owe everything to God. All our circumstance is under God’s providence. Although we are suppressed, there is a reason why God allows this things. We are only controlled by God.
Matthew 22:23-33
Now the Sadducees brought the question of resurrection at issue. They tried to trap Jesus in logical contradiction, rather they were blamed for not to know the Scriptures and the power of God. They thought heaven is the extension of this world. But as a witness, Jesus manifested the other face of heaven where is totally different from this world. It will repeat the first creation of God to perfection. There is no hatred but perfect love to every person.

Matthew 22:34-46
Law shows God’s character and his hope to our life. And Law proves we cannot reach to the level where God wants us to be by ourselves. But the Pharisees were satisfied with their observation on the regulations as not knowing its spirit. We need Jesus who makes the essence of the regulations known.
David deserved having honor and respect from his descendants. But Jesus was also born in his lineage rather David called him as his lord. That is because David also needed Jesus for his salvation. It is not a matter of hierarchy but a new life. As for the salvation and solution for his sin, Jesus is the only way as the Messiah. David needed the Messiah, to say nothing of other Israelites.

Matthew 21

Matthew 21:1-11
New world where people expect is like the kingdom of David. They believe that Jesus will restore their pride. However, Jesus entered Jerusalem with riding on the donkey although he accepted applause and hospitality. His purpose is not to establish the powerful kingdom in terms of worldly view but heavenly value. Therefore, he was not totally red-faced in front of people. It is because core value in his kingdom is sacrifice, humbleness, and love. Christianity is not about grandizement.

Matthew 21:12-22
Jesus drove out all who were buying and selling in the temple. And he asked people broke down the temple in other part. All deeds that they did in the temple would be nothing. All sacrifice would be denounced because Jesus would be crucified. His action is not about cleaning the temple but proclamation of all ceremonies in old testaments.
Israelites who didn't accept Jesus who is the completion of old testaments would wither. Although they should realize they couldn't be the children of God, they just boasted of theie identity as the chosen people. They totally misunderstood. We cannot enter heaven with the shoddy leaves but the fruits of faith.

Matthew 21:23-32
If they understand the ministry of John the baptist, they could accept Jesus. But they didn't have any intention to accept John, instead they just wanted to avoid the coming wrath. There is no Abraham's children without born again.
In this sense, though they wanted to obey God's word, they couldn't reach. Why? As the prophet Hosea said, unless they break up their unplowed ground, they couldn't sow righteousness and reap the fruit of unfailing love at all. Heaven is for the people who repent their sin and come back to Jesus.

Matthew 21:33-46
It's another answer in a comparison for Jesus' authority. Jesus said that the kingdom of God will be given to people who produce its fruit. Therefore, it is also related to Messiah. Without Messiah, they can never bear proper fruit.

Matthew 20:1-16
What kind of reward will we receive in heaven? Before we talk about reward in heaven, we have to know we are called to amazing grace. Unless God called us, we would do nothing. But, in vineyard, we can play a role as a worker. Calling is incomparable grace.
Although the first and the last have the same wages, the reason why the first is blessed is at least they don't waste life. The unemployed have been suffering from no grace whether they are aware of it or not. It is more valuable to work for God than to lead a fast life.

Matthew 20:17-28
Jesus' disciples had much concern on authority as a reward for following Jesus. Some disciples rallied even their mother for the reward. But Jesus told them again about totally different principle from the world. As Jesus came for death and sacrifice, his disciples also have to live not for themselves but for others. When they achieve this kind of purpose, they will be praised. The best reward for Christian life is to resemble Jesus closely.

Matthew 20:29-34
While Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, two blind men came to him. The crowd didn't let them approach to him. But Jesus never ignored them because he came for these little people. People who didn't understand Jesus' purpose detained them not to interrupt Jesus' way. Because they were ignorant with Jesus' cross, they had much concern on their glory instead of serving people and God's glory. Seek for knowing God's will as left behind my desire.

Matthew 19:1-12
We are so evil that we are trying to abuse even God's words for our sakes. Nevertheless, Jesus reminds us of the first purpose that God wanted to put on us. The only solution is to get back to God's will. We have to break up the soil in our heart for the new heart.

Matthew 19:13-22
God's commandments are not for boast of my deeds and goodness. They accomplish loving neighbors as ourselves.
"To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams." God is saying about the essence more than gimcrack. When we reach to the purpose of commandments, we will join divine joy.

Matthew 19:23-30
A rich man cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. They refuse God's sovereignty in their life because they think they can live without God's help. So they don't prioritize God's will first.
However, the poor will sit down on throne with Jesus. Although they are not rewarded in this world, God knows their life which is submitted all to God. Kingdom of heaven is owned to people who believe all these things are possible with God.

Matthew 18:1-14
How can we have the Christian identity? There is the only way which is to hold the cross. Like a child, it is to carry what God burdened on us. Those who depend on the Father God will be invited to his kingdom.
What, then shall we do with Christian identity? It is God's will that any little one should not be lost. Values in thus world are all about myself.  But the life holding the cross is all about love and sacrifice. There is nothing to boast except for the yoke that Jesus is carrying. Let's practice love and sacrifice for others, not cause people shameful to what God gave them.

Matthew 18:15-35
It is all about Christian life. Jesus saved us like a lost sheep and a guilty brother. Now he asked us to go to the same people who need the salvation. In order to win and establish them, we need endurance. There is no pride but true love with the cross.
Without cross, we cannot be united into one. Only through Jesus, under his cross, we can make an agreement so that God will answer for us. We can't please God alone but together.
We have to forgive people even seventy-seven times. Because we were forgiven from tremendous sin, we are asked to forgive others. Forgiveness is not about doer's mercy or boast, but about petitioner's right. It's the responsibilities of the haves for the have-nots.

Matthew 17:1-13
Nothing compares to Jesus' glory. Moses with the Law and Elijah with the power disappear before Jesus. When Jesus is with us, there is nothing we need more. But Jesus asked them not to tell others this glory. Because Jesus' priority is the cross. He wanted to hide all his glory before the cross. I hope to hide all things before the cross(obedience to God's will) appears in my life. The cross must prevail against my own will.

Matthew 17:14-20
Although Jesus' disciples had seen what Jesus did, they were blamed as "unbelieving and perverse generation". We are weak like them. Nevertheless, the small seed of faith that Jesus planted will be growing and completed to move a mountain because Jesus is looking after us. I am  hiding me behind the cross today likewise.

Matthew 17:22-27
Jesus came here to die for us. Therefore, he did not assert his right. All his lifetime was for people's sakes, not himself. Then, how shall his disciples live? We must live for others as we enjoy our precious life, too. As we respect our own rights, our life should be helpful for others. What profit am I giving people around me?

Matthew 16

Matthew 16:1-12
Jews had been waiting for the Messiah as a political redeemer against Romans. Because they thought they were the only righteous and chosen people of God. As a result, they believed they didn't need the cross. Jesus calls this widespread idea as the yeast of the Pharisees and Seducees. Because Jesus came here to save us. Nobody comes to God and has salvation without cross.

Matthew 16:13-20
The religious leaders didn't encounter Jesus as Messiah because they had their own ideal one. However, Peter met and called Jesus as Messiah while the world refused and ridiculed him. Peter went against the stream of the time.
Although we see the same things, the result can be different totally. If I fill me with worldy desire, we will miss the best experience in life. But, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can face truth.

Matthew 16:21-28
Although Peter confessed his faith and then got the greatest applause from Jesus, he failed to please Jesus. It is the only way to glorify God that we deny ourselves and carry our own cross.
God doesn't accept our effort unless we follow his way. Doing God's work is all a matter of obedience to his will. The cross manifests how Jesus achieved God's will and made himself nothing before God. Before we begin something, we must take much time to consider if God supports the action.
